IECISA in the H2020 BD4QoL project

Madrid, 29 May 2020.- The aim of the BD4QoL project is to improve the quality of life of survivors of head and neck cancer. Progress in early diagnosis and treatment has led to an increase in the survival rate of these patients, who therefore require greater monitoring and control once the disease has been overcome as a prevention measure. The technology consultant IECISA contributes its experience and capabilities to this project, through its Artificial Intelligence and Big Data department. Jesús Gago, of the Engineering & Analytics Division and technical manager of the project at IECISA, describes it as “a great opportunity to apply the technology we develop in the area of artificial intelligence to the care and improvement of the quality of life of people with head and neck cancer”.

Head and neck cancer significantly affects the physical appearance, organ function, psychological condition and quality of life of the patient in general. In addition, compared to other tumours, this cancer carries a high socioeconomic burden for those affected during their illness and afterwards. Today, survival care plans focus primarily on functional and health conditions, while socioeconomic determinants of quality of life are often neglected due to difficult data collection. Through this project, IECISA proposes to improve the quality of life of survivors of head and neck cancer through the monitoring, planning, tracking and management of Big Data (medical, environmental, personal, socioeconomic and behavioural), assisted by artificial intelligence.

The core idea of the BD4QoL project is that mobile phones and other electronic devices have the potential to discreetly capture a large number of individual quality of life indicators. “The initiative we proposed at the first plenary meeting - says Jesús Gago- includes data capture from patient monitoring devices (IoT), configuration of a massive data repository where device data and retrospective clinical information (Big Data) converge, application of transformation quality and control rules and data access (data governance), and use of advanced computing techniques to design predictive models that advise practitioners in the clinical and psychosocial care of study patients (machine learning)". Analysis of quality of life indicators will allow risks to be anticipated and will inform patients and caregivers of personalised interventions at an earlier stage to prevent the long-term effects of treatment.

Participating in the H2020 programme is an opportunity for IECISA, as well as facilitating its access to new networks of alliances and knowledge of where the market is evolving. "Participating in a consortium, made up of technological, clinical and research partners, - explains Miguel López Valverde, of the Health Area at IECISA- enriches our proposal while positioning us in a sector undergoing a revolution in the use of technologies and innovation. Creating a complete technology model tailored to the needs of patients will enable us to incorporate people with similar conditions into our initiative, as well as create a system of interaction and monitoring of all types of chronic disease”.

IECISA also collaborates on H2020’s IMMERSE project, which aims to improve the socio-educational inclusion of all refugee and migrant children through integration policy recommendations. To this end, the consultancy firm is developing the OnBoarding tool which will serve to identify indicators that reliably reflect the behaviour of refugees in their socio-educational environment.

The name of the project is Big Data Models and Intelligent tools for Quality of Life monitoring and participatory empowerment of head and neck cancer survivors. It is coordinated by the University of Milan and involves 12 European partners, including the technology consultancy IECISA.
